How To Study The Bible, Inductively-Part 2

Step two of the inductive bible study method, is just as simple as the first step. In the first step, we covered prayer. Our prayer life is the cornerstone to effective bible study. It is also the most effective weapon we have in the spiritual realm.

Step two is important, as well. This step will give us an incredible knowledge base from which we can draw many life applications. This step also takes some time. But, face it, there is no time limit on studying scripture. You have a lifetime to know God and get to know God. You will need the character quality of diligence, stick with it, you won't be sorry.

This step involves the beginning reading. It is kind of like preparation work that you will need to get the most out of your study. This is the very method for getting into God's word.

The first thing to do is to read the entire book that contains the verse, or verses, you are studying. Context, which will be emphasized through out these lessons, is vital. All too often, people mis-interpret scripture because the context in which it was written is missing. You will need this knowledge, because, in the end, you will want to share with others what you have learned and applied.

I recommend the King James bible for your study time. It is the purest form and will get you on the right path. I will explain my views on this in another, future, series.

Read the whole book, at least, three times. Take notes, if you like, on points of interest and questions you might have.

Once you have read the whole book three times, begin reading the chapter three times. Again, what is being stressed here is context, it is very important. We are not out to give you a cookie cutter bible study with pre-determined questions and outlines. This is designed for you to study the word of God for yourself. God will speak to you.

Once you have read the chapter, move to the verses that are in question. Read them three times, as well. I know, this is a lot of reading. Again, you have plenty of time, there is no limit. Plus, you don't have to feel like you need to do this all in one day. The point is to get you into the Word on a daily basis.

All the time you take is up to you, but prayer must be taking place all the while. Asking God to reveal truths to you is key. He will not let you down. There have been many times that I have cried out to God for clarity and it never ceases to amaze me how quickly He will respond. So, keep praying.

That, in a nutshell, is step two. Reading God's word, over and over, to provide the context you will need for life application. Next time, we will get into actual study. For now, enjoy reading the greatest book ever written.
